Life in Mumbai’s Slums

BBC Radio’s “Slumdog Millionaire: Life in Mumbai’s Slums” captures the ambiance of the city’s Dharavi slums, home of Rubina Ali and Mohammed Azharuddin, young stars of the Oscar-winning film, “Slumdog Millionaire.” Tinku Ray’s report is interspersed with the din of traffic, crowded streets and markets, children playing and screaming, and interviews with Rubina and Mohammed against this backdrop in their homes, far removed from the red carpets of Los Angeles. The ambient sound in this piece is continuous and dense, immersing the listener in a distant setting and appealing not only to his aural sense but to his faculties of sight and smell as well.
